Handwriting
I've made a little book for the grade ones to practise their handwriting this term. (Term III 2014) We're using the Habit of Mind 'Striving for Accuracy' to encourage the kids to focus on their formation. These were hand-made (except for the covers) and it sounds like a lot of work, but once I got going, it only took about 5 minutes for each book. Times that by 28 kids and it was done while I watched a couple of episodes of Supernatural!! Our mantra while doing these is '8 accurate letters is better than 20 messy ones'!
We've also about 8 copies of these made for some more intensive work for kids who need help with specific letters. They're in display book type folders and the kids use whiteboard markers to practise forming the letters within the frame.
Our Handwriting program for the year (2011) involves an initial self and teacher assessment. This gives students the opportunity to set goals for their writing and each week they work on their goals using the Handwriting Gallery. Those at the Advanced Level have flexibility in what they do as their handwriting is consistently legible and well formed. We encourage them to have fun with flourished capitals, using calligraphy textas and making personal books of quotes, poems they like etc. The powerpoints below give guidance as the students work through the goals.
