Parent Info
We run a short training course for parent helpers in the junior grades. Parent helpers are really valuable and it's important we give them support to understand their roles (what they'll be doing) and their responsibilities (working with children check, confidentiality, appropriate ways to deal with kids) This year (2013), this involved a preliminary meeting (about an hour) then opportunities to attend 3 parent info meetings on 21st Century Learning, Reading and Writing that were open to all parents. We were pleased with the response and we've received good feedback from parents about the process

Our first Parent Information Session was about 21st century learning. This was an opportunity to share with parents some of the changes our modern world is demanding of education. I began talking about 4 generations of my own family and how education was for my Mum, myself, my niece and my great niece, then we moved on to talking about why these major changes occurred. We talked about the skills 21st century learners need now and into the future. I ended up giving this particular presentation 3 times - an afternoon session for parents, an evening session for parents and the school board and a session for our staff.
Unfortunately I can't post that presentation here because there's too many photos and things of kids.
The next presentation was on reading and I can upload that one.
The final presentation was on writing and I used a lot of Jenny Eather's work for this one so I won't put it up.
We've agreed it'd be good to do a maths presentation next, but that might be next year...

Parent Info Meeting Reflection (powerpoint)
This was used as a reflection before all the sessions. I'd have it playing as the parents came in, just to set the tone. I've taken out all the photos of our kids but it's really impacting when it's full of them. |
Our 'library on the landing' outside the junior rooms had a bit of dead space at the top of the stairs, so I've set up a small parents area with some resources.
