Setting up a Reading Environment
Our class library
I can't tell you how much importance I place on a love of literacy. To this end, I put a lot into setting up a classroom library that will draw kids in. Novels, non-ficition, picture books, magazines, Mp3 stories, dictionaries, phone books, newspapers, altases, kids' writing, puzzle books ... and poetry ... lots of poetry. Add colour, soft toys, soft furniture, easy to manage labelled storage and some library monitors to keep it all together.
Personalized Reading Strategy poster ( 1 pg word doc) Having the luxury of working with some kids one on one and in small groups this year (2013), I've been able to develop some individual strategy posters to get kids really thinking about what they're doing when they're reading.

Using very cute bookends (bought at a $2 shop) to display books. Just added an icy pole stick with a bit of blu tac and voila! - bookends become book stands! Displaying books face forward has so much appeal than stacking them along spines forward. I wish more school libraries knew that!
