London Olympics 2012

To 'do' Olympics or not to 'do' Olympics? We decided yes. 4 years ago, these kids were too young to learn much about the Olympics and in another 4 years, they'll be well into their teens, so now is their big chance.
Our actual topic this term is 'Community' with the focus in our level being 'Law and Order' - a civics/history unit. It doesn't lend itself really simply to inquiry so we've decided to let the kids do an inquiry on the Olympics. We will also focus on the community values promoted by the Olympics.
We intend to focus on the Olympics for about a month then the plan is to move into 'Law and Order' We thought a nice transition would be for kids to 'adopt' a country other than Australia for the Olympics and follow their journey, finding out as much as they can about the country along the way. To end we'll get them to investigate the type of government their adopted country has and then, armed with this information, we'll smoothly (!) move into how Australia is governed and the other understandings from the 'Law and Order' unit.
