Homework
My thoughts on homework are below, but now (2017) we don't do formal homework. We expect nightly reading and we provide plenty of opportunities for kids and parents to make home and school links instead of mandating set tasks. However we do give each child a diary to keep for the year. We put in all the important dates for our class and record our home reading titles. The students bring in their diaries once a week to be signed and checked. Here's the documents we use to set this up.

Diary Expectation Write Out 2017
(1 page word doc) If a student is frequently forgetting to bring their diary in every Friday (except for extenuating circumstances), they have to write out the above!! I set this up out of frustration last year when so many kids were forgetting week after week. Instant success!! |
Diary Cover 2017
(1 page word doc) Again with the label paper to make these, so they stick on really cleanly to the front cover of the diaries and it's then REALLY easy to see who's left their diary lying around! |
I hate homework. If I had my choice, it'd be banned in favour of family time. But until all schools agree on this - especially high schools - then I think we have a duty to prepare kids for it, especially when our parents are so much in favour. So if we're going to do it, then I think we should do it properly.
It's also got to involve choice for students and have a clear rubric so kids and parents know what expectations are.

Homework tub, ready to go - we'll start slowly, just reading and spelling, but our assessment grid really highlights accuracy and presentation.
