Writing Assessment
i-pen
Finding time to conference in a meaningful way with individual students while everything else is going on would be one of the most difficult challenges for teachers.
This is not a perfect solution but it's helping at the moment and the kids love it. They call it 'the magic pen'. It's an i-pen which can record and play a voice. I take the kids' writing drafts home and record myself reading them and correcting them out loud. Each particular recording is linked to whatever you're writing at the time so I just write each kid's name and give them advice about their writing.
Then as part of literacy, each student takes a turn with the pen, just outside the door (so the sound isn't disturbing) They tap their name with the pen and my recorded voice goes through their work with them.
I encourage them to edit as they listen. You can pause, go forward, backwards, louder, softer, faster, slower so it's quite a clever bit of technology. I keep conferencing notes on areas where they need to improve so I'm able to keep track of progress. I've also found it gives kids more quality constructive feedback and I can make suggestions for publishing.
I've also use the i-pen to record kids' reading for assessment too. Handy tool.
